The Social Account : Why Contribution Matters More than Popularity?

The Social Account is about living a life that contributes more than it consumes.

One Conversation Changed Two Lives

one conver two lives

Many years ago, after I became a Reiki Master, life presented me with an unexpected lesson.

One afternoon, I happened to meet a school friend whom I had not seen for many years.

The moment I saw him, memories from school came flooding back. He had been one of the naughtiest boys in our class. If someone had asked me then who was least likely to become calm, compassionate and deeply spiritual, his name would probably have been at the top of the list. Later in life, my friend proved me wrong, and I am happy to have been proven wrong.

We stood talking for a long time.

As the conversation unfolded, I sensed something beyond the words. Outwardly, he seemed fine, but inwardly, he appeared to be carrying a burden.

I invited him home.

During our conversation, I asked him a simple question.

It wasn’t a clever question.

It wasn’t a coaching technique.

It was simply the right question at the right moment.

He became completely silent.

Neither of us realised it then, but that question marked the beginning of a journey that would transform both our lives.

Over the following months, he began working on himself with extraordinary sincerity. He learnt Reiki, continued his inner work and eventually became a Reiki Master himself.

Today, I can honestly say that he has gone much further than I ever did in that field.

Yet that isn’t what fills me with pride.

The greatest joy comes from watching a human being discover the greatness that was already within him.

Did I transform him?

Absolutely not.

He deserves every bit of the credit.

He had the courage to confront himself.

He did the hard work.

He remained committed to the journey.

If I played any role, it was simply that of a catalyst.

The beautiful irony is that while I may have helped him begin his journey, he has contributed enormously to mine. He has inspired me, challenged me and enriched my own life in ways I could never have imagined.

That experience taught me one of the greatest lessons of my life.

The highest form of success is not changing people. It is helping people discover the strength to change themselves.

Until that day, I believed success was about improving myself. That experience taught me something far more profound. The real measure of growth is not how much we develop ourselves, but how much our growth enables others to grow.

That was the beginning of my understanding of the Social Account.

What Is the Social Account?

what is a social account

When people hear the word “social”, they often think of networking, parties, social media or having a large circle of friends.

For many years, I believed the same thing.

I have always been an introvert.

Large gatherings never excited me.

My circle of close friends has always been small.

For a long time, I believed that meant I wasn’t socially successful.

Then one day I realised that I had been asking the wrong question.

The question is not,

“How many people know me?”

The better question is,

“What am I giving back to the society that has given me so much?”

That changed everything.

I realised that the Social Account is not about popularity—it is about contribution.

Today, I define the Social Account like this:

The Social Account is about living a life that contributes more than it consumes.

It is the account that measures the value you return to society through your character, knowledge, service, and compassion.

Popularity Creates Attention. Contribution Creates Legacy.

popular vs contribute

Today’s world celebrates visibility.

Followers.

Subscribers.

Connections.

Likes.

Views.

There is nothing wrong with these.

But, remember, they are measurements of attention.

They are not measurements of contribution.

Real social wealth is created when someone grows because you encouraged them.

When someone avoids making a mistake because of your advice.

When someone becomes more confident because you believed in them.

When someone chooses integrity because they watched you live it.

Those moments never trend on social media.

Yet those are the moments that quietly shape families, organisations and societies.

Invest in Society

invest in society

Throughout the Balance Sheet of Life, we have been making investments.

Invest in your Health.

Invest in your Wealth.

Invest in your Professional Growth.

Invest in your Relationships.

Invest in Yourself.

The Social Account invites us to make one more investment.

Invest in Society.

Not necessarily with money.

Money is only one way of giving.

Give your time.

Share your knowledge.

Encourage someone who has lost confidence.

Mentor a young professional.

Volunteer your experience.

Help someone without expecting recognition.

Sometimes, the greatest gift we can offer another human being is simply believing in them before they believe in themselves.

The Five Levels of the Social Account

5 levels of s acc

Level 1 – Presence

People know you.

Every social journey begins with presence. At this stage, people recognise your name, know who you are, or have interacted with you. Presence creates visibility, but visibility alone does not create value.

Question to reflect:
Am I simply known, or am I remembered for something meaningful?

Level 2 – Connection

People trust & relate to you.

Relationships deepen when trust is established. At this level, people feel comfortable approaching you, sharing their thoughts and seeking your guidance. Genuine communication, empathy and integrity become the foundation of your Social Account.

Question to reflect:
Do people feel psychologically safe when they interact with me?

Level 3 – Contribution

People grow because of your presence.

Now your focus shifts from yourself to others. You willingly share your knowledge, experience, encouragement and time. You begin creating value without expecting anything in return. Your success is measured not by recognition, but by the positive difference your contribution makes.

Question to reflect:
How am I helping others become better than they were yesterday?

Level 4 – Responsibility

You consciously choose to make society better.

Contribution becomes intentional. You no longer wait for opportunities to help—you create them. Whether it is mentoring young professionals, improving your organisation, supporting your community or standing up for what is right, you recognise that every citizen has a responsibility to leave society stronger than they found it.

Question to reflect:
What responsibility have I accepted that goes beyond my own personal success?

Level 5 – Legacy

Your values continue creating impact long after you are gone.

Legacy is not about buildings named after you or statues erected in your honour. It is about the ideas you shared, the values you lived, the people you inspired and the lives you influenced. Your contribution continues through those who carry your work, your character and your vision forward.

Question to reflect:
If my work stopped today, what would continue because I lived?

Legacy is not the end of the Social Account. It is the natural outcome of a lifetime of contribution.

From Success to Significance

As I studied the lives of successful people, I noticed a fascinating pattern.

Many spent the first part of their lives creating success.

The latter part was devoted to creating significance.

They became mentors.

Teachers.

Philanthropists.

Founders of institutions.

They realised something profound.

Success asks,

“What have I achieved?”

Significance asks,

“Who have I helped become better?”

I believe significance creates a deeper sense of joy than success alone ever can.

Contribution Begins with Better Questions

contributions with better questions

One of the greatest discoveries in my own journey was that the quality of our contribution depends upon the quality of the questions we ask ourselves. Purpose is rarely discovered by looking for answers. It is discovered by asking better questions.

Many years ago, I came across three powerful questions by Nido Qubein. I made one small change to the first question to make it relevant to everyone, not just people in business.

These questions stayed with me for years.

I did not answer them overnight.

I lived with them.

They challenged me to think differently, helped me discover my uniqueness and eventually led me to my life’s purpose.

I invite you to spend time reflecting on these questions.

1. Why should people interact with me? (The original was Why should people do business with me?”

Every interaction is an opportunity to add value.

When people spend time with me, do they leave feeling encouraged, wiser, more confident or more hopeful than before?

What unique value do I bring into another person’s life?

2. Can anyone imitate me?

Knowledge can be copied.

Skills can be learned.

Products and services can be duplicated.

But your character, your values, your life experiences and the way you genuinely care for people make you unique.

The more authentic you become, the more difficult it is to imitate you.

3. If the world wants what I offer, will they think of me first, second or at all?

This question is not about becoming famous.

It is about becoming relevant.

Have I consistently created enough value, trust and credibility that people naturally think of me when they need what I uniquely offer?

I cannot answer these questions for you.

Only you can.

As I reflected on them over many years, one answer gradually became clear to me.

I am here to make a difference.

That became my purpose.

And I discovered something profound.

Purpose is not something we find.

It is something we uncover through reflection, contribution and service.

The Ripple Effect

the ripple effect

Imagine throwing a small stone into a still lake.

The ripples spread far beyond where the stone first touches the water.

Life works in exactly the same way.

A kind word.

An honest conversation.

A lesson shared.

A young person mentored.

A family strengthened.

A difficult decision taken with integrity.

Each creates ripples that may continue long after we are gone.

Most of us will never know how far those ripples travel.

But they travel nevertheless.

Never underestimate the power of a single conversation. One conversation changed my friend’s life. That same conversation changed mine. Every contribution creates a ripple whose destination we may never see.

Final thoughts

final thought

One day, people may forget your job title.

They may forget the size of your house.

They may forget your achievements.

But they will never forget how you made them feel.

They will remember whether you encouraged them.

Whether you stood beside them.

Whether you believed in them.

Whether your life made theirs a little richer.

Perhaps that is the real purpose of the Social Account.

Not to become famous.

Not to become popular.

But to become a quiet force that leaves every life it touches just a little better than before.

Because in the end…

The richest Social Account belongs to the person whose life continues creating value long after they are gone.

When your Health gives you energy, your Wealth gives you resources, your Professional Account gives you credibility, your Relationships give you support and your Self Account gives you clarity, your Social Account becomes the place where all of them come together in service to something larger than yourself.

Reflection Questions
final reflection

Take a few quiet moments and honestly reflect on these questions.

  1. Am I contributing more to society than I am consuming from it?
  2. Who has benefited because I chose to share my knowledge, time or experience?
  3. What unique value do I consistently bring into people’s lives?
  4. Do people remember me for what I achieve or for how I make them feel?
  5. Which level of the Social Account am I currently operating from—Presence, Connection, Contribution, Responsibility or Legacy?
  6. What is one contribution I can make this week without expecting anything in return?
Connecting to the Balance Sheet of Life

A healthy Social Account cannot exist in isolation.

If your Health Account is weak, you will have little energy to serve others.

If your Wealth Account is unstable, contribution may become difficult.

If your Professional Account lacks credibility, people may not trust your expertise.

If your Relationship Account is weak, your contribution may lack empathy.

If your Self Account is underdeveloped, your contribution may be driven by ego instead of purpose.

The Social Account is where all the other six accounts begin to express themselves in service to society.

A balanced life naturally creates meaningful contribution.

Connecting to the V.I.P. Impact Cycle™
vip impact cycle

Contribution without implementation remains intention.

The V.I.P. Impact Cycle helps transform good intentions into measurable impact.

  • Vision (Visibility): What positive contribution do I want to make?
  • Influence: How will I inspire trust and create value?
  • Performance (Presence): What consistent actions will demonstrate my commitment?

As your contribution grows, so does your influence.

And as your influence grows, your ability to make a meaningful difference expands.

Personal Action Plan (PAP)
pap

Choose one action from each level.

Basic

Perform one act of kindness every day without expecting recognition.

Intermediate

Identify one person you can mentor, encourage or support over the next three months.

Schedule one meaningful conversation every fortnight.

Advanced

Design a long-term contribution project.

It could involve mentoring young professionals, volunteering in your community, sharing your expertise, or creating educational content that continues helping others long after it is published.

Remember:

Contribution becomes legacy when it becomes consistent.

Measuring Your ROI
roi

Most people think the return on contribution cannot be measured.

I disagree.

Measure both tangible and intangible returns.

Tangible ROI

  • Number of people mentored.
  • Hours invested in service.
  • Community initiatives completed.
  • Educational content created.
  • Lives directly impacted.

Intangible ROI

  • Increased sense of purpose.
  • Greater fulfilment and joy.
  • Stronger relationships.
  • Improved reputation and credibility.
  • Greater self-respect.
  • Inner peace.

The greatest return is often invisible.

You become the person you were trying to help others become.

Live a life that contributes more than it consumes.

That is the mark of a healthy Social Account.
